What parameters should you provide for pH / dissolved oxygen / conductivity electrode selection?
Updated on October 25, 2026
Electrode selection needs four parameter groups: duty information (medium, temperature, pressure, viscosity, agitation), measurement requirements (range, accuracy, output), structure and certification (ex-proof, protection, wetted materials, insertion length), and accessories/notes. The more complete the form, the more accurate the selection and the faster the quotation.
Conclusion first
The information needed for electrode selection falls into four groups: duty information, measurement requirements, structure and certification, accessories and notes. The more complete the form, the more accurate the selection and the faster the quotation — with incomplete information we can only quote a generic model, and we have seen too many electrodes that never fit their duty on arrival.
Group 1: Duty information (decides whether the electrode survives)
- Industry: lithium battery, pharmaceutical and fine-chemical selection preferences and acceptance standards differ completely
- Vessel or piping: name, size, material; installed in a reactor, a line, or an open tank
- Installation position: side, top or flow cell — determines the guard form and insertion length
- Process medium: name and concentration — always flag fluoride, high temperature and strong alkali separately; these are the first determinants of electrode life
- Operating pressure (G) and temperature: both operating and design temperature, with margin against the peak
- Viscosity and density: at operating conditions; for slurries add solids content
- Agitation or not: stirring speed in rpm — affects erosion-resistant probe selection
Group 2: Measurement requirements (decides the transmitter and signal scheme)
- Measuring range: give max / normal / min — especially for conductivity, where a range spanning three orders of magnitude completely changes the cell constant choice
- Accuracy: process monitoring versus process control differ by a tier
- Local display or not; and the distance between display and probe (determines the cable scheme)
- Output signal and power supply: 4–20 mA, RS485/Modbus, or integrated digital
Group 3: Structure and certification (decides whether it can be installed and pass acceptance)
- Ex-proof and ingress protection ratings: per the site area classification (non-ex / Ex d / Ex ia)
- Electrical connection size
- Wetted material requirements: for battery-grade materials controlling metal ion leaching, state it explicitly
- Electrode insertion length and guard form: for retrofit projects, attach a photo of the vessel nozzle dimensions
Group 4: Accessories and notes
Mounting brackets, calibration solutions, cable lengths, spare quantities, and any special requirements (automatic cleaning, hygienic clamps, high-temperature sterilization, etc.).
The easiest way
We have prepared a standard Electrode Selection Parameter Form (Excel) with the four parameter groups listed item by item. Download it, fill it in, and send it back to info@flten.com — an engineer will return a targeted selection proposal the same day. You do not need to know electrodes; just fill in the blanks.
