Reactor Oxygen Measurement & Control System
An integrated delivery system combining oxygen analysis, sample-gas conditioning, nitrogen purge and interlock control, used for reactor inerting control in flammable-solvent duties such as lithium battery cathode precursor synthesis.
What is actually delivered
Not “one oxygen analyzer plus a bunch of accessories”, but a functional loop that can be acceptance-tested:
- Given condition: oxygen content in the reactor ≤ setpoint
- Means of achieving it: online measurement → evaluation → nitrogen addition → re-measurement, closed loop
- Safety backstop: over-limit alarm + interlock (cut off feed or shut down)
- Traceability: data logging, reviewable after the fact
The five parts of the system
- Sampling and conditioning: heat-traced sample lines, filtration and dehumidification, pressure and flow stabilization
- Analysis unit: Hamilton (Switzerland) optical fluorescence process sensors (primary recommendation for percent-level oxygen; tolerant of moisture and solvent vapors, low maintenance); electrochemical analysis unit for trace-oxygen duty
- Control unit: FLT-TYPE-02 or PLC, responsible for display, alarm and output
- Actuation unit: nitrogen control valve, shut-off valve
- Interlock and recording: interfaced with the reactor control system
Common engineering pitfalls
| Pitfall | Consequence | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Sampling point located in a dead zone | The measured atmosphere does not reflect the reactor interior | Sampling point position must be confirmed at the proposal stage |
| No heat tracing in the conditioning line | Solvent condensation blocks the line | Design heat-trace temperature per the medium’s dew point |
| Alarm without interlock | Operators keep feeding material without seeing the alarm | Interlocks must be hard-wired, not software-only |
| No periodic calibration | Data drifts out of truth after six months | Provide a standard-gas port + calibration procedure |
Acceptance criteria (recommended for the contract)
- Deviation between the online oxygen measurement and laboratory sample analysis within the agreed tolerance
- Interlock action test: simulate an over-limit condition and verify reliable shut-off
- Quantifiable improvement in nitrogen consumption before and after the purge-logic change
